CHAPTER 13

“I’m guessing you know this Leni McKenna,” I assumed after Rhett and I left Emily’s Treasures.

The stares I got as we walked down the street in the direction of where Rhett said the office for the Junction Journal was located made me a little self-conscious.

“Yep. I do.” He stopped at another vendor along the way down to the offices of the Junction Journal. “We will take two.” He pulled some cash out of the front pocket of his jeans.

“I’m not hungry,” I told him and tried to figure out the timing of all this and how it was going.

While he waited for whatever he was getting to eat, I got my phone out of my purse and checked to see if Richard Stone had called or texted.

He hadn’t.

I dialed him.

“Hi, Richard. It’s Violet. There’s been two murders involving two people from Holiday Junction. I really think this story is getting much bigger than just Jay Mann murdered on an airplane.” I pulled the phone from my mouth when I noticed Cherise, the flight attendant, standing near one of the band stages. “I have some interesting details that look like they’re tied to the case. In fact, the main officer here, I guess he’d be the chief, has asked me to look into some details. He had checked out my past, and I have glowing reviews from Sheriff Hemmer in Normal.”

I was really talking myself up. I had no clue what Al Hemmer had even told Matthew, but how I was asked to assist in solving the murders here had to be a good sign.

“I’m sure you’re so busy getting my salary and bonus structure aligned”—I threw in the bonus thing because I needed it after all the work I was doing, and this dress I was wearing for the good of the investigation—“that you’re not able to take my call when I do call. I have my phone on me now, and it’s fully charged. Let me know what direction you want me to take on this murder investigation, since it looks like I’m stuck here another day.”

I had made it across the street and over to where Cherise was standing out of her uniform. She looked way better than the day I’d seen her. She had a huge smile on her face, and her hair that had been up in a bun was now flowing down her back. The uniform did nothing for her long legs that went for miles in her red capri pants and thin arms that poked out of the sleeves of her snug white sweater.

“Oh my. Look at you, Violet.” Cherise turned with a beer in her hand. “You have drunk the Shamrock Festival juice.”

She looked me up and down with her assessing eyes.

“You wouldn’t even believe it if I told you.” I sucked in a deep breath. “Do you have any idea when they are going to let us leave?”

“No clue about your flight, but I’m on a flight tomorrow heading east.” She smiled and pointed to the man next to her.
